Our laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying gene regulation, cellular signaling, host adaptation, and antifungal resistance in pathogenic fungi. By integrating fungal genetics, functional genomics, multi-omics, and experimental infection models, we aim to understand how fungal pathogens adapt to changing environments and establish disease. These fundamental discoveries are further translated into new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of emerging fungal infections.
OPPORTUNISTIC FUNGAL PATHOGENS such as Candida, Cryptococcus, Aspergillus, and dermatophytes serve as our major research systems. We investigate gene regulatory mechanisms, fungal-specific signaling networks, and pathogenicity determinants using genetic manipulation, functional genomics, transcriptomics, and other multi-omics approaches. Our goal is to understand how changes in gene expression and cellular signaling control fungal growth, stress adaptation, antifungal resistance, and virulence, and to translate these discoveries into new therapeutic and diagnostic strategies.
We study how pathogenic fungi sense host-derived signals, adapt to host environments, and overcome host defenses. By integrating animal infection models, organoid-based systems, and multi-omics analyses, we define the mechanisms underlying tissue invasion, blood-brain barrier penetration, and disease progression. A particular focus of our laboratory is invasive candidiasis and cryptococcal brain infection.
Our laboratory develops antifungal strategies by linking target discovery with efficacy evaluation. We identify fungal vulnerabilities from signaling pathways and virulence programs, and assess natural products, synthetic compounds, and device-based approaches for antifungal activity in vitro and in vivo. We are particularly interested in therapies effective against drug-resistant fungi and in anti-virulence strategies that attenuate fungal pathogenicity without simply inhibiting growth.
We analyze clinical and environmental fungal isolates to establish translational platforms for species identification, resistance profiling, and strain characterization. Our research aims to improve the rapid recognition of emerging fungal pathogens, including drug-resistant Candida auris and newly introduced dermatophytes, and to connect isolate-level information with treatment response and pathogenic traits.
